John Kennex was a star detective, pride of his department, with medals and awards, and an expert marksman. He had a beautiful girlfriend, a great police partner, and lots of friends. But then everything changed when the fire nation attacked when he led a raid against Insyndicate, a large crime organization. They knew they were coming, and killed everyone except Kennex.
A year and a half go by with him in a coma. He wakes up, and his whole world has changed. His girlfriend's gone, he's missing his leg, practically everyone at the station gives him judging looks. A few months go by, and he rejoins the police force. It's 2048, and now every human cop must have a robotic police partner. John continues on solving cases, saving the police station from a raid and saving countless lives, and clearing his father's name.
Fast forward to when he's in recovery in reality. He realizes immediately that he now has a leg, which thrills him to no end. But he's grouchy and angry about the recovery process, and he's grouchy and angry about the situation he's found himself in. It's been a month since he's been unplugged, and he's just starting to find his feet.

Kate Bishop was unplugged almost five years ago from a matrix full of superheroes, aliens, and sorcerers in which she was the unofficial leader and only unpowered member of a youthful superhero team. She joined the ZDG as soon as possible and has served on hovercraft as an operative, weapons specialist, and emergency back-up pilot as well as a trainer in both in-Matrix and real combat when in Zion. She's a bit of a jack of all trades when it comes to uploading, but has particular skill and comfort with projectile weapons.
She's known for being hard-working, skilled, and brave, but with a streak of reckless heroism and some reservations about unplugging those who aren't thoroughly discontent. She's lately grown restless with the post she's held for the last few years and it's no secret that she'd like a ship of her own someday. She's actively seeking First Officer opportunities and chances to curry favor with the Council, and would jump at any chance to captain.
Outside of her role in the ZDG she's typically friendly and outgoing, straightforward to the point of bluntness, and loyal to her friends. She tries to stay under the radar but does sometimes step in and play neighborhood superhero/private eye, solving problems and neutralizing threats that law enforcement can't or won't deal with. Despite her mixed feelings about the unplugging program (or at least the way some captains approach it), she's totally committed to defending the human population against machine attack, as well as more generally helping and protecting people in need and she's perfectly willing to risk her life to do so (but less willing when it comes to anyone else's). She enjoys relentless training, classical music, matrixes with beaches, breakfast food, and the color purple.

Natasha's another redpill from the superhero Matrix, though it's hard to say if she really fits the bill. With no anomalous powers to speak of, Natasha's background is that of a Russian superspy who was trained and possibly brainwashed from a very young age before defecting to the USA, and joining up with the guys who investigate all the alien activity, SHIELD.
It hasn't been that long since her extraction — she was pulled around the same time as Steve Rogers, though she's adaptive enough that it's mostly the short hair that gives her away. Natasha is still getting her bearings psychologically, given most of her survival has been based around being certain what's real, but she has an interest in shipping out and joining Zion Defense. Most of the time, though, she's quiet, observant, and likely to tailor her personality to get what she needs out of whoever she's talking to.
