recruitment drive
▶ RECRUITMENT DRIVE
This drive is now CLOSED.
With the loss of three ships and the destruction of four crews, there now exists a vacuum to be filled. As per this video posted to the network, ZDG Command will be taking action in not only replacing what they have lost, but reconsidering the structure of the Grid as a whole to make it the best it can be.

With the loss of three ships and the destruction of four crews, there now exists a vacuum to be filled. As per this video posted to the network, ZDG Command will be taking action in not only replacing what they have lost, but reconsidering the structure of the Grid as a whole to make it the best it can be.
Comment to the below forms, but also feel free to ask questions, discuss amongst yourselves, and so on. Over the next month, we will contact players as crews are formed, and announce our new fleet when the drive is ended.Captains, first officers, pilots, and operators will be actively trained up and sought after, and you can put your character forward to be considered for these roles in the comment sections below. All aspects of the mini-application will be considered by Command (and mods). We want to build two to three crews, based on playerbase population. We will open this up for more in the future, but please do not let that prospect deter you from coalescing into teams for now. There will be future recruitment drives that may shake up structures, and the standard Recruitment page with captain sign up will remain a constant. Usually, captains must be able to name a first officer, a pilot, and an operator to apply. During this recruitment drive, this requirement will be foregone, and blank spaces will be filled for you by Command (and the mods), streamlining the organizational process. You can still nominate these positions, though, whether they are IC or strictly OOC. We will assume you have permission from those players. No IC experience is required to apply for the above roles, but will still be considered along with other criteria during selection. We encourage all crew volunteers from the Return to Harbour plot to follow through on this step to solidify your place in the ZDG. Those that apply and miss out on their first priority roles will be reassigned based off their mini-app. Prospective captains can be first officers, pilots can be co-pilots or trained up in heavy weapons, operators can be software specialists, anyone unplugged can be a Matrix operative, and so on. There is a space on the form for you to fill our your desired backup, and you will be given opportunity to train up (if needed) in the skills of your primary pick. While heading or being a part of a PC crew is not essential to participate in plot or Matrix missions, it will afford you a lot more flexibility to do so. You will be able to develop consistent team CR, as well as freely enter and exit the Matrix without needing to handwave NPCs or wait for plot opportunities. The OOC signs up aspect of the drive will close on April 19.
▶ CAPTAIN SIGN UPS
However, all applicants must have experience crewing on a hovercraft. Other recommended qualities include, on top of having a general understanding of all workings of a hovercraft, being politically savvy, knowing a sense of military hierarchy, and displaying leadership in being able to manage a team of disparate individuals. Captains are also expected to frequent Council meetings, and may find themselves in political audience frequently.
To apply for this role, fill out the form below and reply to this comment.
▶ Metzger
Character Name: Simon Metzger
How long have they been in service to ZDG?: 17 years
In what positions/capacities?: Operative 5 Years > First Mate 5 Years > Captain 7 Years
Reputation: Politically involved pro-Human (Anti-Alliance) military vet with black market connections and little patience for unplugged wistful about their lives in the Matrix. Good to people he trusts to get things done for him, can’t even with people he doesn’t. Tenacious, competent and completionist with a good track record for mission success. No personal life.
Would probably fail a background check: previous captain died under suspicious circumstances and more than half his crew was killed during an undisclosed incident that grounded his ship a year ago. Prone to shit talking, feels like he has clout enough to get in the grills of other Captains he disagrees with, his relationship with the council is harder to get a bead on.
▼PRE-ESTABLISHED CREW NOMINATIONS
First Officer: Bill Cage /
Pilot: Johanna Mason /
Operator: BLANK
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: Metzger is a capable pilot, gunner and operative and a mediocre-to-poor operator. Beyond basic combat medic first aid type stuff you wouldn’t want him as a medic, but he’s (very) roughly familiar with drugs and drug administration due to some experience abusing and trafficking. Shit engineer, has enough mechanical know-how to jerry-rig and patch hovercraft systems in an emergency (esp if following instructions from someone more capable).
Other details: Previously worked with Vrataski and Allaway long term + Dust and Anders short term in addition to Cage and Mason. He’d mention their names as crew he’d like to keep if they’re interested in staying on.
no subject
Character Name: Wedge Antilles
How long have they been in service to ZDG?: 6 months
In what positions/capacities?: Pro tem captain of the Durga, six months as a mechanic
Reputation: No nonsense and militaristic, Wedge exudes leadership. In his Matrix, Wedge was a seasoned pilot who was promoted to general based on talent, not politics. Has a keen sense for people's skills, both how to bring them out and how to utilize them. Unlike what's typical for high-ranking officers, he genuinely cares about the welfare of his crew. He's also technically minded, purposely working as a mechanic for six months to be well acquainted with the hovercrafts he hoped to fly. Has a noted interest in rehabilitating problem cases.
However, he greatly dislikes politics, and easily chafes (and downright disobeys and, worst of cases, deserts) if he thinks an order is morally bankrupt/nonsensical/dangerous to the good of all. His only saving grace in this area is that he has great instincts, so he's usually right.
▼ PRE-ESTABLISHED CREW NOMINATIONS
First Officer: Temporary (Wedge intends for Luke Skywalker to become his first mate.)
Pilot: Luke Skywalker
Operator: Blank
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: Pilot, and/or anything relating to engineering
Other details: He'll rename whatever ship he gets. He'd also prefer to be assigned some of the old crew of the Durga, and make a point that he wants difficult applicants/potential crew members others might not necessarily want due to history of insubordination/misconduct/what-have-you to rehabilitate them. (See this for more details.)
High potential for drama due to accusations of nepotism (wanting Luke as his first mate) as well as Wedge's streak for doing things his own way because Wedge Antilles knows best so fuck formality/social contracts/bureaucracy.
(ICly the first mate could apply thinking it's long term, but the player OOCly knowing some sort of drama could happen that would have them replaced. Please PM me or message

Character Name: Milagros Gallo
How long have they been in service to ZDG?: Slightly less than 3 years.
In what positions/capacities?: Trainee/operative for the better part of a year. Operator for 2 years.
Reputation: Works hard, parties harder, and is a total hardass both professionally and, probably, personally. Driven, exceptionally competent, impatient with what she views as stupid or unnecessary; she adapted very quickly to reality and hit the ground running to achieve her professional goals - doesn't always have time for people who find it more of a struggle to let go of their matrices. Assertive and sure of herself; not hostile, but disinclined to soften herself for people who perceive her that way. Would not be readily described as "accommodating", but diplomatic when she feels that it's worthwhile or necessary; her expression might skirt the line of inappropriate things to say to a superior from time to time but she holds herself to a high standard of professional and personal conduct. Still; kind of an asshole.
▼PRE-ESTABLISHED CREW NOMINATIONS
First Officer: Deucalion /
Pilot: Hawke /
Operator: BLANK
(These are OOC suggestions!)
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: Operator; Mila has been working in this role for two years and has a strong preference for it over working as a matrix operative, though she is fully capable of performing that role when and if necessary. Also a weapons specialist as necessary to qualify as an operator, and has basic medical skills.
Other details: Mila doesn't have an existing ship assignment.
Kate Bishop
Character Name: Kate Bishop
How long have they been in service to ZDG?: 5 years
In what positions/capacities?: Primarily Operative, some Weapons and back-up Piloting
Reputation: Kate's established herself as a skilled and dedicated operative, cool under pressure, adaptable, and with a knack for leadership despite her relative youth (sometimes it's more like being blunt and bossy since she's hasn't actually been in leadership positions, but that's just a matter of perspective, right?). She's mostly willing to play by the rules and follow orders, unless she thinks lives can be saved by not doing so. Her instincts are usually good ones.
She's packed a lot of missions into her budding career and earned a rep as something of a workaholic, but a friendly one. Before her tempt stint with the Durga she served with an experienced crew for a while before starting to chafe at being low man on the totem pole and looking for a chance like this one to strike out on her own. She hasn't had much political involvement yet, but has been angling to start making Council-connections here and there without yet declaring any particular affiliation.
▼PRE-ESTABLISHED CREW NOMINATIONS
First Officer:
Pilot:
Operator:
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: First Officer, Operative, Weapons/Pilot
Other details: n/a
▶ Steve Rogers (with OOC permission)
Character Name: Steve "Captain" Rogers (
How long have they been in service to ZDG?: 2 months
In what positions/capacities?: Operative (Medea retrieval/rescue, Shangrila training and multiple low-risk missions)
Reputation: Especially after Tony is done commenting loudly at favored ZDG drinking spots, all will know that Captain America single-handedly rescued dozens of prisoners of war and brought low a Nazi stronghold, then went on to save his world from being completely overwhelmed by alien technology in a momentous event of kamikaze-into-icebergs piloting, causing him to hibernate, after which he woke up and led small combat units against kinds of technologically-superior aliens and more Nazi infiltrators. The odds were on average like one thousand plus catastrophic flying death machines against three. Though this all took place in the Matrix, and Tony does not appear to be the most reliable narrator, this strange tale gains surprising (and perhaps even more believable) support from the very fact the Defense Grid chose to extract Steve at all... and his admirable performance during the recent rescue effort of the Medea and other ships. Kids like him too. He is the light/small bean of justice.
▼ PRE-ESTABLISHED CREW NOMINATIONS
First Officer: Natasha Romanoff /
Pilot: Blank
Operator: Tony Stark /
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: First Officer or Operative (Real tactical and Matrix operations)
Other details: Steve has had extensive experience working with same-canon PCs (Natasha Romanoff, Bucky Barnes, Tony Stark, etc.) as well as military experience with the United States Army and Strategic HOsjglsjfls (SHIELD) in canon. Although he no longer has the physical prowess given to him by biochemical therapies in the Matrix, he retains all mental qualities, such as calm (or at least coherent self-sacrifice) under fire and general tactics.
Note, Tony will initially apply on Steve's behalf, and Steve will attempt to submit a redundant application IC because he had no idea.
▶ FIRST OFFICER SIGN UPS
Most of the expectations of a First Officer are similar as to that of a Captain, in terms of being a jack of multiple trades across a hovercraft and displaying leadership qualities. They may also participate in political conversation, but to a lesser extent.
To apply for this role, fill out the form below and reply to this comment.
no subject
Character Name: Deucalion
How long have they been in service to ZDG?: 1 year.
In what position/capacities?: Operative.
Reputation: A short but incredibly solid history in extraction and rehabilitation work, a calm and level-headed operative with a proficiency in handling people. Deliberately took a position on the Scramasax to soften out their rougher and more reckless edges in extractions. He's an anomalous virus carrier, the culture and roots of such may not be entirely abandoned. There are ongoing concerns about his plugged-in self-image wherein his blindness returns, and he
went full hermitself-isolated for several months working on the farms when he was first unplugged.▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: Staying as operative with a specialisation in extraction and rehabilitation. (OOCly, I'd be okay with him being pushed to captain if it's needed!)
Other details: He's currently on the Scramasax. First officer under Mila would be cool! They haven't worked together but do know of each other within the ZDG.
no subject
Character Name: William Cage
How long have they been in service to ZDG?: 3 years
In what position/capacities?: An operative onboard the Nidhogrr for two years, and a First Officer for one year.
Reputation: Falling on an anti-Alliance side of the fence, Cage is a politically quiet presence nonetheless, someone who doesn't mind finding compromise and smoothing over situations with a degree of social charisma thanks to his Matrix background. He makes bad ideas sound good. He doesn't have a lot in the way of close friends but develops tight bonds with his colleagues, and is otherwise a friendly personality, even if it can sometimes come across as a front.
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: Operative, someone geared towards training up new recruits in simulation; a good man to have behind a turret in a Sentinel battle, handy with a rifle. He can run operations out of sheer strategy, just don't expect fancy hackery or troubleshooting from him. He can co-pilot as needed.
Other details: He has served exclusively on the Nidhoggr for the past three years but has no problems pulling shifts on other ships while she's in shop, or sometimes volunteering longer stints on the Shangrila.
▶ OPERATOR SIGN UPS
On top of being technologically savvy, this also means an operator must have or strive to have a strategic mind, being able to consider scenarios and think quick to recommend action. Without that, you could get people killed. Operators also often double as co-pilots, software specialities, weapons specialists, be in charge of the EMP weapon, etc.
The level of code literacy is as such that this role is often filled by free borns, who have had a lot of time to learn it, but the specifically computer-minded unplugged may pick it up quickly, even within a matter of months. This role can also be taken by a trainee, with a captain or first officer pulling double duty until they are up to speed.
To apply for this role, fill out the form below and reply to this comment.
▶ PILOT SIGN UPS
Pilots often have secondary talents. They may also be communications monitors, or double as operators or backup operators; they may have a weapons background and be combat oriented; they may give up their seat on occasion and submerge themselves in the Matrix now and then. Being a pilot does not necessarily mean you're at the wheel all the time, but being at the wheel is fun too.
To apply for this role, fill out the form below and reply to this comment.
Re: ▶ PILOT SIGN UPS
Character Name: Saphir Gneiss
How long have you been in service to ZDG?: Just during Return to Harbor
In what position/capacities?: Weapons specialist and general mechanic
Reputation: While Saphir is extremely talented and picks up new skills quickly, he has a very grating personality and can be frustrating to work with initially. He warms up once he's sure he's needed and works best with positive feedback.
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: Saphir, if placed elsewhere in the crew, fills an engineering/mechanic niche well, and has a talent with building and maintaining weapons. These are the roles he filled on the Durga during the Return to Harbor plot.
Other details: I'd like him back on the Durga/whatever ship Wedge is assigned to if possible; his CR with Wedge has been great, and while he doesn't like him very much, he will be a better member of Wedge's crew now that he's got the idea of proving him wrong! in his head.

Character Name: Luke Skywalker
How long have you been in service to ZDG?: No ZDG experience
In what position/capacities?: None, Luke is a Realness babby but he piloted the shit out of those X-wings in the Matrix
Reputation: Luke's transition has been a rough one, no one will deny that. He's had trouble letting go of his former life and the loss of the Force has likely been the cause of a couple breakdowns. Luke feels that being without it means he needs to compensate, which might not be true but it's meant that he's sped through physical recovery. He's also very ambitiously putting forth as much effort as he can spare into making a life for himself in the Real.
Though he's had bouts of frustration and some emotional instability, Luke has shown nothing but kindness and compassion for the people around him (even if he scared or angered them a little bit at first with his screaming) and he's always looking for a way to become involved and aid the greater good. Though stubborn about letting go of his memories and relationships from the Matrix, he's held no hesitation about integrating into the Real in all practical senses. He's been eager and possibly even a bit annoying about his ambition and curiosity. Throughout the few weeks he's spent around the shipyards he's been showing a lot of interest in learning about local technology, even spending some time helping the mechanics so he can learn.
Despite being new around here, Luke held positions of high respect and leadership in his Matrix, and he was the one of the greatest pilots in the galaxy's history. On the other hand, he was at the top of the ruling government's most wanted list and was known for being quite the rule-breaking rebel so his reputation might depend a lot on whose side you're on.
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: Anything involving weapons and/or fixing stuff (gunnery, engineer/mechanic, etc...). Luke will need training in any role but he has extensive Matrix experience in all of that.
Other details: Wedge has probably put in a good word for him here and there. He was Luke's second-in-command for years in their Matrix and they were very close.

Character Name: Johanna Mason
How long have you been in service to ZDG?: 1 yr + 1 month (with occasional interruptions)
In what position/capacities?: Trainee/operative for half a year, before moving on to more specialized pilot work.
Reputation: Even if she'sstill mostly known for her bad attitude, Johanna at least has skills, grit, and determination to fall back on. After her extraction, she worked hard to learn the necessary skills to join up with a crew as a trainee operative. Her more innate skills were in combat and sheer guts, but she quickly sized up her options and decided to pick up piloting, in order to make herself a more valuable operative. Her first few forays on actual crews didn’t go well. Johanna was dismissed from a few teams - quietly, but firmly. She wasn’t blacklisted or anything, and there were enough crews around that she was able to join up with a new team before very long. Her temper and her poor people skills stacked the deck against her - not to mention her recklessness. But she's a good pilot, and (when she obeys orders) a good operative, and she's (so far) lasted for a respectable time on the Nidhogrr. Generally, whatever she lacks in experience, she makes up in determination.
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: Johanna likes the work of an Operative even more than she likes piloting, even if piloting is super bitchin'. She focused most of her efforts on Operative work, at first, training so that she could jump into the Matrix and get her adrenaline rush in. Her work as a pilot actually came second, to make herself a more valuable crew member. Her background with combat was all in her Matrix and all hand-to-hand (or, really, axe-to-face), but she's very cunning in that field too.
Other details: Currently affiliated with the Nidhogrr, which is where she intends to try to stay, as long as she's permitted. Still pulling shifts on other miscellaneous ships, to keep busy and herself plugged in as often as possible. Still kind of an overall bitch. Sorry not sorry.
▶ OPERATIVE SIGN UPS
Operatives can have different specialties and additional work responsibilities -- they can have a focus on medical assistance, or on communications or hacking, or mechanical maintenance, or be in training to become a specialised pilot or operator. They can be strictly a Matrix operative, but be warned, everyone is generally expected to pull their weight in the Real.
To apply for this role, fill out the form below and reply to this comment.

Character Name: Seoraj Allaway
How long have you been in service to ZDG?: 24 years
In what position/capacities?: APU pilot (10 years), hovercraft operative (14 years).
Reputation: Seoraj is affable, hard to rile, the self-proclaimed morale officer of any crew he happens to be on; his mood 90% of the time seems to be sort of a weebles wobble but they don't fall down situation. He's a bit earthy in his humour, and prone to outbursts of song and physical contact that aren't everybody's cup of tea, but respectful of established boundaries and overall a decent sort doing his best. Very good at his job, very professional when performing it; his political stances and the like mostly a large ? to people who don't know him well, which might not endear him to people who take a harder line than his tendency to fall in behind his captain 9 out of 10 times; in conversation with people he doesn't know well, liable to fall back on 'above my paygrade, mate' when discussing politics.
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: Seoraj has trained as a pilot, mostly a "just in case" back up rather than because he has any real aspirations to pilot a hovercraft - he is primarily a weapons specialist + mechanic, having an early background in engineering growing up in Antioch and developing an interest in development and maintenance while he was still piloting APUs ~in his youth~.
Other details: Seoraj has come and gone from various crews but is most strongly associated with Metzger and the Nidhoggr, which is the assignment he considers to be "his" even when he's touring with another craft and crew.

Character Name: Arthur "Point"
How long have you been in service to ZDG?: Just signing up now
In what position/capacities?: n/a
Reputation: Arthur is a very focused and hard worker, if incredibly reserved. When at ease, he's friendly, but outside of his comfort zone, he can be reserved to the point of seeming disinterested and he isn't always the most tactful person unless he wants to be. He isn't likely to brag about his skills, but in seeking a place with the ZDG, he will admit to experience with firearms, explosives and hand-to-hand combat in his military past, as well as a comfort with lying and playing a part.
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: Operator, which is where I would like Arthur to move to once he's got more experience under his belt. I think it's a role that he will thrive in and that is very similar in a lot of ways to his role as Point Man in his criminal career. I don't think he has the experience for it yet, as Zion's still very new to him, but I would like to get him training towards that role.
Other details: In Arthur's case, he's new enough that Operative seems like the best place to start and he does have the skills for it, but I think he could do well as an Operator or even a First Officer once he gets the experience he needs in this new world.
no subject
Character Name: Garrett Hawke
How long have you been in service to ZDG?: Literally zero minutes
In what position/capacities?: See above
Reputation: Willingness to take on and attempt to excel in just about any task, cool head in a crisis, easy to work with, BUT the ...recurring inability to take like, anything seriously definitely rubs some people the wrong way and can be a detriment to a working relationship, especially with authority figures who parse the flippancy as disrespect. (... it sometimes is.)
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: Pilot. He'd definitely need training, but the capacity to think in several different directions is an asset there, as well as a lot of experience with making the hands and eyes work separately and together in tandem. As a note I'd absolutely love it if he ended up in this role? I'm signing up for operative first just because he's ...totally unqualified to be a pilot, as of this moment, but with training his general collection of traits does make him well suited, and I love the idea. So if you're deluged with operatives I am definitely down.
Other details: Libby and I have discussed Hawke having a role in Mila's crew, if possible!
Re: ▶ OPERATIVE SIGN UPS
Character Name: Natasha Romanoff
How long have you been in service to ZDG?: 0 time.
In what position/capacities?: 0 roles.
Reputation: Adapts fast, nosy, strong political interest.
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: She wants to learn literally everything, with a particular focus on weapons, piloting and Matrix code.
Other details: If Steve gets assigned somewhere she might try and slide in that direction even though she claims to be ~free of ties~ to her Matrix. Otherwise I am mostly interested in having her get some hands-on experience and a regular team. I think she'd be a great Operator or First in the long run, but she's also got her Matrix basics under her belt. Her long term goal is a council or aide position but at this stage joining the ZDG seems like a strong declaration of loyalties and a good way to make contacts and get skilled and be noticed.
no subject
Character Name: Emily Finch
How long have you been in service to ZDG?: new blood
In what position/capacities?: n/a, since she's a very new arrival
Reputation: Emily hasn't been out of therapy for very many weeks just yet, though she was an attentive and determined patient. For those who have encountered her since, she's been quiet but friendly, helpful if she can be and otherwise staying out of the way.
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: She would also be open to piloting, though she has no training and would be starting from ground zero. She would even be open to becoming an operator, though her native tech savvy is low, so it would be even more of an uphill climb.
Other details: Soft skills are Emily's strength; she's open to working with whoever she's assigned to. She just wants to learn, for now, however that's feasible.
no subject
Character Name: Rita Vrataski
How long have you been in service to ZDG?: ~4 months
In what position/capacities?: Trainee and operative, with a focus on weapons/defense in the Real
Reputation: Reserved, a little misanthropic, sharp-tongued, military through and through, there's something going on with her and Cage...
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: Rita would definitely prefer a role in gunnery to anything else. For this one, she wouldn't need too much additional training. She wouldn't say no to learning some more about engineering or piloting. Putting her on medical duty would be the worst choice anyone could make.
Other details: She's worked with Metzger and Cage before, and has some personal... stuff... with Cage that goes a little beyond them being from the Matrix already. I'd like to keep her working with Cage to explore that, if possible.
no subject
Character Name: Fenris
How long have you been in service to ZDG?: No time whatsoever
In what position/capacities?: See above
Reputation: Taciturn; pessimistic; short-tempered. But he's great in a fight, especially inside a Matrix (getting better at it outside of the Matrix, too). As a fighter, he's strong, capable, and efficient; he takes direction well and executes orders to the letter (though not necessarily without complaint).
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: He'd need additional training, but Fenris would do well as a gunner--or anything else that utilizes weaponry + endless aggression.
Other details: None at present--he's just looking to get on a crew at all.
no subject
Character Name: Bucky Barnes
How long have you been in service to ZDG?: He's fresh out the pod.
In what position/capacities?: N/A
Reputation: Bucky started off kind of defiantly closed off from his recovery team & then disappeared from the Shangrila as soon as he could walk, but while he was there, he followed orders so well it was a little weird & worked diligently at recovery. Upon his (very recent, as in I still need to do these tag-ins tonight b/c I'm slow) foray into operative training, has taken to the combat part like a fish in water, and while he's having trouble ~freeing his mind~ on the whole, he's hella determined about it. In his own Matrix, he was a highly skilled assassin and developed a number of skills that are easily translatable to Operative work, even if since extraction he's mostly been quiet & cagey.
▼ MISCELLANY
Alternate Role Preference: Bucky could also make a decent Pilot, having a little piloting experience in his Matrix and an appreciation for mechanics that could be developed, but his current skills are better suited to Operative.
Other details: He's worked with Steve Rogers & Natasha Romanoff in his own Matrix (although, y'know, #itscomplicated), and Deucalion was a member of his extraction team who he seems to have bonded with.
