+ addition on time ratio

[personal profile] sfoils 2015-03-25 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'd actually prefer for the game's time ratio to stay at a 1:1. As Amber stated, the game's current speed isn't conductive to a 1:1 ratio, but I'd admit I'm biased for it to stay as it is: I have dyscalculia, which makes it incredibly hard for me to play in games with skewed time ratios.

Feedback: I feel like since the mods are both on my plurk you've seen my enthusiasm about your hands-on GM style of modding and the amazing concept of the game itself. It seems like a lot of work and you guys are so on top of everything and I am just really impressed in general.

I'd kind of like more information about daily life in one consolidated place, since right now the informational focus seems to be on the ZDG, but I may hit up the FAQ with my specific questions about furniture and room size and food availability and stores/markets and clothing. It's not urgent tho!

I also feel confident that going forward there will be more opportunities to use the cool Matrix setting and AU characters into other fictional worlds but I still wanna mention it here, since it's a big part of the draw for a lot of people.

Finally, something else I've talked about on plurk, the 1:1 time ratio doesn't feel conducive to the low AC and collection of very slow taggers (including myself! and basically everyone I've threaded with! this isn't meant to be a condemnation) combined with a setting that by necessity has a lot going on. Obviously in this universe there's a lot of missions and extractions to pull out new characters, as well as political machinations and whatever else you guys have in store, and I'm concerned that rolling those events out in a believable timeframe in a 1:1 ratio will result in that thing where people are still backttagging one event and feel they either have to handwave the thread or choose not to participate in the new thing. I'm not suggesting people speed up their tagging or that the gameworld slow down, so the controllable variable is obviously how time passes.
Of course, there are pitfalls of abandoning the 1:1 ratio, not the least that controlling how time passes is more work for you guys, but I mostly wanted to suggest it early as someone who gets really frustrated by handwaving-heavy games where the majority of interactions and development and plot don't get threaded out because the world pace is faster than the majority of the playerbase can keep up with tagging.

Anyway, take all this with a heavy handful of salt, I love the game and have confidence in you guys and the work you do, and I understand that the game is still very much in development and settling into itself.

Feedback: My only concerns so far have really been about the opening event, or at least the more plot-intensive aspect of it. Having an opening mingle is fantastic for generating CR, and I do really admire the hands-on GMing and NPC elements you've incorporated! But the plot-intensive aspect of the event has been really closed off and dependent on characters who already had their feet under them in one respect or another. I feel it's left a lot of players who either couldn't get involved due to the status of their characters or didn't get involved due to their confidence in the game/setting quite adrift, with plot going on in a pretty removed bubble while others twiddle their thumbs and wait.

I know you plan to do a plot closing post to bring everyone up to speed, and I don't want to assume on what your plans are, but I would really love to see something IC about it that everyone can access (like a network post). I would also agree with Amber's notes about more day-to-day setting details, extended maybe to a couple more mod-run mingle type logs to try and support more general confidence in playing in the setting.

I am in general really excited about this game and the passion you guys have expressed regarding it. The Matrix has been a long, long love of mine, and I am really really interested in seeing more of the plot you have planned here unfold and getting to play with all the cool ideas you've built.

Feedback:
Mod team has been AWESOME about being a.) super communicative, b.) super on top of stuff, c.) really fun and exciting events, d.) interactivity. You guys are so involved and well-organized and have clearly fleshed all of this out extensively. It's very exciting to see. Please consider all of the below suggestions for improvement rather than criticism; I'm in love with everything you're doing and everything this game chooses to be!

General Accessibility:
That said, the OOC comm could really do with some aggressive use of tags. OOC intro tags, mod post tags, etc. And I'd really like to see them in a sidebar below the nav stuff. Trying to go back to the mod plot info has been a real headache sifting through the 900 character intros. ... I now see that the sticky post at the top of the OOC comm in fact has a link to the event post BUT it would still be nice to use tags so that as the game progresses, we could easily track mod posts, AC posts, event posts, OOC intros, etc.

Event:
I felt the plot post itself was lacking, in that it described the inciting incident of the event ("the celebrations are cut short when a hovercraft returns from what was a simple scouting mission with news that Sentinels attacked and destroyed four ships, a massive blow to the Zion Defense Grid") and the requirements for sign-up, but did not give an explanation of what those sign-ups would be doing or anything for people who weren't actively doing those threads to know what to poke at. It made it hard to access the event if you weren't in a position to sign up for those spots or actively involved in those threads. There was also a comment in the post "staying home in Zion will carry equally important opportunities" that I never saw follow-up on. It's not impossible that I simply missed follow-up, but it definitely wasn't presented centrally in the OOC comm or anything, so that was disappointing.

Especially with an event that happens in the beginning of the month like this, I think it's important to be clear about a.) what people should be aware of, b.) how people can be interacting with those actual storylines, because otherwise, people wind up paralyzed in what they can do while other people who are directly involved can just backthread the even itself. It really limits indirect involvement through reactions.

Daily Life:
Seconding Amber's comments about wishing I knew more about daily life in Zion! It seems very scattered. Some general cultural, resource, living conditions, etc. notes would be very nice in the "Real" section beyond what's there. A lot of the game seems to push towards people signing up for the ZDG, with promises of more to come for the Zion civilian side but little in the way of details there to actually pull on.

Matrix:
Seconding Amber's comments about access to missions and stuff in the Matrix also!

Timeline:
Just to weigh in one this: I've almost never seen skewed time ratios work well. But if you're planning on having an event per month, you could say that each "month" takes place over the length that event takes, and allow people to thread within the month for that span, and then next month we move on to the duration of the next story movement, etc. That depends on if you're ready to post the event info at the beginning of the month every month, though, like you did this month. Idk, food for thought! The setting lends itself towards interesting downtime, but it seems like you guys are very story-focused, so that might be an option you want to consider.

NPCs:
It'd be nice to have a centralized way to request NPC interaction! Since many of them are just generally around, etc. Like Amber already said, they are definitely one of the game's biggest strengths, I think, and I'd like to see them get more play-time!

Feedback: You guys continually impress me. I think my only thing I want to bring up is dittoing what the others have said about fleshing out daily living more. And in that vein I think I'd like to see plot posts balanced out with more day in the life posts in the next couple months, because it helps me, in general, to figure out my character's routine and how very eventful plots might disrupt that. You guys have given great plot so far and I'm super enjoying it, but I also don't want anyone to get burnt out or not get to explore what this world is like during quieter times.

Feedback: Going to echo Koke's comments about the opening event and the accessibility of the plot. I felt it was catered more for characters IC'ly very established in the game than it was for characters not as IC'ly established. Playing a character nowhere near as IC'ly established in game, I felt at a bit of a loss as to how to incorporate my character into the plot beyond her just hanging around twiddling her thumbs. I know this is not necessarily any reflection in how the game will pan out from this point forward, and you've already expressed in response to other people's feedback that you're still working out how to handle this kind of thing, which is awesome! But I do feel, particularly with how slow the game has started out to be and thus the slowness of establishing CR, that there might need to be some more mingle logs that cater for everyone across the board while the game is still in such early stages and while people are still trying to work out the dynamics of how their character fits into the setting as well as the dynamics of pre-established CR.

Also going to echo some more information on the daily life in Zion. I feel having a more solid picture of how life generally runs in Zion will make it easier for people to get more involved. It's possible the pace of the game may even pick up a bit more once people feel more familiar with the setting and where their character fits in with everything/everyone.

Outside of these issues, I think it's a great concept for a game and I'm enjoying the easy, slow pace. The mods have put a lot of thought and effort into the game and it really shows. Looking forward to seeing what you guys have in store for this game!

Feedback: I love everything so much!! People have given some really good feedback already, but I would definitely also be excited to see more setting info that addresses day-to-day life. Technology level & availability is something I've particularly puzzled over recently, for example what accessing the network even looks like, are we all using smart phones or nineties desktop computers here or what, etc. But just having more concrete setting information to turn to would be great, as others have said much more eloquently.

One specific suggestion though: I was really excited to see the Mission Control page go up, and I know it's still under construction. Low-Clearance Mission sounds like a great mechanic for giving players some direction without requiring so much mod GMing, and I'm excited to see where that goes. But it made me wonder if something similar couldn't be established for non-ZDG "missions" too, to create more opportunities for non-ZDG rp and help players feel more comfortable engaging with the setting as a whole. For example, something like the Job Board at Juncture in ye olden days of yore, which provided a brief, basic structure for a "side-quest" that utilized the setting and minor NPCs without requiring much mod involvement, aside from an info-dump PM'd to one or more of the players who signed up for each quest.

Personally, that's something I found incredibly helpful (or potentially helpful, anyway) both for kicking off new/unexpected CR and for getting a clear, concise sense of the setting without that "oh god oh god what am I doing" feeling of making things up completely on my own, and without needing to rely solely on the mods either. It might even be cool to have a screened "drop box" post for players to submit ideas, so not all of the world-building has to come from the mods, and players who do feel comfortable in the setting can stretch their world-building legs a little with enough mod oversight to maintain consistency. Just a thought! And forgive me if that's, y'know, exactly what y'all were already planning for Low-Clearance Missions, in which case I'm just here to radiate excitement. o_o

Feedback: I already joined the wave of people +1ing setting details, because I feel like that's the thing that has stopped me up the most this month. It's kind of felt like a few of the ship-geared people have zoomed off in awesome plot and the rest of us barely even quite know what is and isn't kosher to RP in their day to day life.

Another thought: I know this is a mission-based game, but since not everyone can go on every mission for various reasons, it might be nice to see some lesser shit happening in Zion itself? Like 'a giant fistfight breaks out over X in Y public area' in which maybe they're disagreeing over something plot-relevant even if it's kind of a one-off. Basically, for people who are like "well... my dude's not on a mission, now what?" Something at least to kind of babysit the rest of us while the missions are going down. I've seen a few different people say the new less-established people were kind of left drifting with this plot and I agree to a point - and it could've been fixed super easily if there were even a 'hey, occupy yourselves with this if you're stuck at home!' Am I making sense?

Just something to think over, I'm obviously just one person so if it doesn't work out for the game then no sweat at all. You guys still continuously impress me with how fuckin' badass all the HTML is and how thorough and ugh.

everything I had thought to say has already been said very eloquently. I could hop around marking down +1 on stuff but generally I just want to throw out a big general +1 to pretty much everything Amber (and other people) said (which you responded to and I read it & appreciated it).

really I think the big thing for me would be to specifically echo the sentiments on day to day life to help regular ol' joes who aren't on crews get established. I purposefully apped one character to be crew active (Johanna) and one to be more daily life oriented (Bloom), and I've definitely felt the same lack of grounding for the latter of my two, just based on distribution of my comments this month. but again, I've read your responses (so nice! so thorough! so positive!) and feel confident that you've got stuff in mind.

also thank you for being so approachable, hands-on, and excited! it makes me excited about the game and all of the opportunities that are to come. you guys have put in a lot of work here and it shows. thanks for being great!

Feedback: I'm having a lot of fun so far! I think you guys are doing a great job of fleshing out this environment and getting it off the ground and I am seeing so many cool ideas.

One thing I've noticed is that there hasn't been much for characters to react to if they weren't involved in that first mission. Having started up a game from scratch myself, I know it can be hard to get the ball rolling on regular posts and regular activity at first. I think maybe if we had a few small things for our characters to react to or interact with, it could help get the ball rolling more and build up some momentum, because I know that once the momentum is there, it can usually sustain itself well, but it's definitely a challenge to get it there. Maybe it could be something political or even just something that's sort of background to the setting, but allows for either interaction or reaction, because I haven't seen a lot of posts going up through the month and while I know that everyone is still tagging things from earlier, I think that if outside players glance at the game, they won't see that and it's important for a game to look a little more reliably active to appeal to new players.

I also think that the pace has been a little slow for 1:1. Whether you eventually decide on a day ratio or something else, I do think that something needs adjusting in that regard, even if it's just in the way information is relayed or things are posted, because it feels like threads are being resolved a little too slowly for 1:1 with the current set-up. I think right now, I've only finished one thread from the intro log. While these threads aren't necessarily plot- or action-packed, I'm a little concerned about how this will go when I do have threads with important outcomes if those take a month+ to resolve and it's also a month ICly.

Feedback: I have 0 opinion on the time ratio, tbh. Every game I've ever been in pretty much back or forward dated / fudged it to suit their purposes and yet be accurate.

Aside from that, great modding, well done, steaks all around.
